MOUNT BURDELL
SATURDAY, MAY 3, 2008
8 AM - 12:30 PM
with Ellen Blustein

This gem in northern Marin, with its oak woodland, grassland and mixed forest, is a prime nesting area for over 50 species of birds -- many of which have wintered south of our border.

Join us on this uphill stroll as we look and listen for many of these birds. Past trips have yielded Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Bullock's Oriole, Lazuli Bunting and Western Kingbird, plus a host of other species.

The weather can range from cool to hot, so dress accordingly! Bring
water and any snacks you might want to carry. Please arrive before 8 AM -- we start birding at 8 AM sharp! (The birds are more active before it heats up)

Directions:From Hwy 101 in Novato, take the Atherton/San Marin exit and go west on San Marin Drive. Turn right onto San Andreas Dr. (fifth street on the right), continue towards the end and park near the Marin County Open Space entrance.

FIVE BROOKS
SATURDAY, MAY 24, 2008 - 9:00 AM - NOON

with Lowell Sykes

Join us for Spring birding at Five Brooks, a horse riding facility located on Hwy 1 south of Olema. The horsey smell and activities seem to attract many birds to this small area! There is a combination of grassy fields, coastal scrub and mixed forest with a small picturesque freshwater pond surrounded by willows, alder and a few dead trees (still standing). This is a great spot for woodpeckers, songbirds and wood ducks! Other birds that may be sighted are Steller’s Jay, Western Bluebird, towhees, Wrentit, Purple Martin, Green Heron, Red-shouldered Hawk and several species of swallow.

Five Brooks, which is well sign-posted, is located on the west side of Hwy 1 between the towns of Bolinas and Olema. From Hwy 101 take either Shoreline Hwy (Hwy 1) from Mill Valley out to Stinson Beach, then drive 17 miles north or Sir Francis Drake Blvd. from Greenbrae to Olema then turn south and go about 3 miles.

Directions: Meet at 9 AM in the upper parking lot (about a quarter of a mile off Hwy 1). Bring liquids, snacks and layered clothing. Beginning birders are especially welcome. For further info call Lowell at 415/388-2821.
