Monitoring Northern Spotted Owls
with Heather Jensen & Renee Cormier

(Northern) Spotted owls have been monitored in Marin County since 1998 -- their num-bers remaining stable until 2005 and their reproduction rate one of the highest within their range.

2007 was the first year they did not breed at all. Why? Logging is not a factor. Could it be urban development? Intense recreational pressure? Genetic isolation? West Nile Virus? Habitat change due to Sudden Oak Death? Or the recent expansion of the range of the barred owl into the spotted owl’s range?

The National Park Service’s field crew leader, Heather Jensen has monitored the owl since 2002. Renee Cormier has worked PRBO Conservation Science’s spotted owl projects and songbird banding since 2002.

Come learn and bring your thoughts, observations and insights to discuss this ecologi-cal problem.
