Western Scrub-Jay

Size: 11-13 inches

This bird lives in woodlands, chaparral, and suburban gardens. Scrub jays bury acorns as a stashed food supply coming back later to retrieve the acorn when needed.

Food: Insects, seeds (including lots of acorns), eggs, nestlings

Nest: cup nest made by male and female

In Marin: year round

Scrub jays help our oak forests by burying acorns 5000 acorns a year and

forgetting where they hid some of them!
