Brown Pelican

Size: 45-54 inches

This bird has a pouch attached to its beak which expands under water as it dives from the air to catch fish. Brown Pelicans were listed as endangered in 1971 due to the pesticide DDT. They were removed from the endangered list in California in 2009.

Nest: In tree, on cliff, or on ground

In Marin: year round, but most go south in the fall to breed in Baja California and return late spring.

This is a young Brown Pelican.
