Killdeer

Size: 9-11 inches

To keep predators away from its eggs this bird pretends to have an injured wing to distract the potential attacker.

Sounds: kill-dee kill-dee kill-dee gave this bird its name.

Food: insects

Nest: scrape on ground, often in the open. Made by male.

In Marin: year round, but some leave in summer to breed in Canada.
