Marin Audubon Wins Award | Enhancement At Atherton Site

Growing Grass Roots Restoration (pdf file)
by Barbara Salzman

Marin Audubon Wins Award

Our Rush Creek/Cemetery Marsh Enhancement Project received one of only ten awards given for "OUTSTANDING COMPREHENSIVE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT PLAN IMPLEMENTATION" given to estuary-wide organizations and governments. Marin Audubon's award was for implementation of objectives promoting the enhancement and restoration of wetlands.

The Rush Creek/Cemetery Marsh project replaced a tide gate with a combination slide-flap gate to allow more tidal water to enter Rush Creek marsh, and the marsh will be excavated to enhance channels in order to improve water circulation and reduce water quality problems. The gate has already been installed and the excavation will be done this summer. The CCMP programs and objectives address water quality, wetlands, wildlife aquatic resources and waterway modification.

Enhancement At Atherton Avenue Site On The Simmons Slough Wildlife Corridor

egret MAS was able to take advantage of an opportunity to remove fill from one of our properties on Atherton Avenue in unincorporated Novato, without cost to MAS. This opportunity came about because Mission Valley Properties needed fill to raise the old Tennis Club property on Olive Avenue in order to build houses. Mission Valley's contractor, Maggiora Ghilotti, removed the fill placed on our property by a previous owner, and trucked it around the block to the Mission Valley property. This was cheaper for them than transporting fill from longer distances, and it was free of charge for MAS. Our thanks go to Jim Leland and Mission Valley Properties and Maggioria Ghilotti for a successful project that was a win-win for all.

We have hired Wetlands Water Resources, Inc. of San Rafael to prepare a comprehensive enhancement plan for all of the properties MAS owns (two we own now) and will own (one more is planned to be donated by Mission Valley Properties) along Simmons Slough. We anticipate that this plan will involve removing more fill to expand seasonal wetlands, planting of native vegetation and perhaps some removal of non-native plants.
