Welcome to Marin Audubon Society

The Marin Audubon Society was established in 1956 as part of the effort to prevent development of houses on Richardson Bay tidelands. MAS provides its members and the public many opportunities to experience the birdlife and nature of Marin County and beyond through Field Trips and Events, our monthly MAS newsletter The Clapper Rail, and the annual Christmas Bird Counts. For a listing of many of our activities and events please check our Calendar.

Corte Madera Ecological ReserveClose the Gap In the Corte Madera Ecological Reserve

The opportunity to permanently protect a critical parcel on the Corte Madera bayfront is at hand.

After 20 years of trying, Marin Audubon Society has an agreement to purchase this 5.2 acre former tidal marsh property. Once acquired, we will restore the property to tidal marsh, then donate it to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for long-term protection as part of the Corte Madera Ecological Reserve.

We need to raise the contract amount of $1,075,000 by January 31, 2015. If the property is not purchased now, it could be forever lost to development.

This parcel is critical, because it is surrounded on three sides by the Ecological Reserve tidal marsh, one of only a few marshes in the Bay that has never been diked. Such ancient marshes have more complex channel systems and vegetation than newer marshes and support greater diversity and numbers of wildlife. These rare and valuable characteristics will be protected, enhanced and expanded by this acquisition.
